A woman (played by Tanya Danielle)
stands at a hotel room window gazing down at the boulevard below. She
scrutinizes a strip mall populated by three retail
shops and a Mexican restaurant. A dancing hot still graces one of the
signs in front of the restaurant, its presence an enduring testament to
both the former tenant who had occupied the spot and
the fleeting nature of success in this area. Businesses fold, people
migrate, and the region remains in a near-constant state of upheaval. A
government-run family food center down the block services
many of the local residents. Even at this early hour dozens of people
are waiting in a line which extends through its front door, around the
corner, and into a graffiti-covered alley. The woman turns
away from the window. She can still hear snatches of conversation from
the omnipresent groups of loiterers who congregate on the nearby
sidewalks and in the stairwells. They rarely approach her
anymore when she ventures outside. Her disinterest in selling sex or
buying drugs has temporarily displaced their predatory intentions, but
they know that few females can survive for long in this
grim landscape without resorting to one or both activities. They will
wait for her to break. With an abrupt movement the woman closes a
curtain over the open window and climbs back into bed with a
well-worn paperback novel. The noises from the street and her absorption
in the book prevent her from noticing the sound of someone turning a
key in the lock of her hotel room door..
